Frequently Asked Questions About KBLA Membership
If you haven’t read the About the KBLA page yet, there are answers on it to many more questions you may have. Reading that page first is recommended, then come back here to apply for membership!
1. WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE ARE MEMBERS OF THE KBLA
KBLA Members are business, academic, and arts leaders from around the world who operate in Korea or have an interest in doing business in Korea. Current membership is roughly 60% expatriates (non-Koreans) and 40% Koreans. We expect that ratio to stay roughly constant as the community grows.
Unlike chambers of commerce, membership in the KBLA is for individual leaders, not companies.
2. HOW MANY MEMBERS DOES THE KBLA HAVE?
The KBLA currently has approximately 220 members in 2017 so far. Our community is growing at an incredible pace since the beginning of 2015.
3. IS THERE ANY VALUE IN BECOMING A MEMBER IF I CAN'T ATTEND THE MEETINGS?
The KBLA offers great value to each member even if a member cannot participate in many meetings or events. Our information offerings come to you each week. We send out an email a day, on average, with five of those emails being Korea Intelligence reports. This is intelligence on doing business in Korea, and making good decisions in Korea, like you can get nowhere else. Nothing else even comes close. Even if you cannot attend a meeting, the meeting will come to you. We know that our members are busy and cannot attend all the events they would like to, so unless we are prohibited from sharing a presentation or meeting material by a speaker, we provide all meeting materials to all members following each event. Our meetings are too valuable to miss, so we try our best to make sure you don’t have to miss any. We had 30 events in 2016 and have big plans for 2017, including business missions to Hong Kong and Singapore.
4. IS THERE ANY VALUE IN BECOMING A MEMBER IF I'M NOT IN KOREA?
A. The KBLA’s Korea Intelligence Package is even more valuable. We deliver information and business intelligence about the Korean economy, corporations and entities operating in Korea, pending and proposed regulation and regulatory changes, and risk/compliance guidance. This intelligence is difficult to get in Korea and almost impossible to get outside the country.
B. By becoming a member of the KBLA Community, you have access to an instantaneous network of English-speaking business leaders in Korea. By participating in our social media and online forums, you can build relationships with the community and facilitate solving your business problems, even from afar.
5. I'M ALREADY A MEMBER OF A CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. IS THERE ANY VALUE IN JOINING THE KBLA?
We complement each other, rather than compete with each other. As evidence of this fact, several of the heads of the largest chambers in Korea are KBLA members. The KBLA partners with various chambers on joint promotion of meetings and co-development of meetings and events. Lastly, what the KBLA offers is just very different from what is available at any chamber. Our focus on meeting quality, member interactions, cross-border transactions, key Korea intelligence, and introducing our members to things they would not experience on their own, is such a unique basket of benefits that the KBLA is valuable even if you are a member of EVERY chamber.
